IDENTIFY FINANCIAL RISKS

The importance of identifying financial risks in WAN Ethernet deployments

Our top five unanticipated risks you should be aware of.

More than just delays and operational efficiencies are at stake. Poor planning and communication can quickly and dramatically add hard cost to the WAN deployment. These costs are hard to justify to an unsuspecting Board or Executive Team even with a management reserve in place for “Unknown Unknowns”.

Each location has vulnerabilities (technical, environmental & operational) all of which ultimately correlate to dollars. Enterprise companies will not, nor should they, disclose to outside parties the full cost of lost time, missed deadlines, and legacy WAN connectivity extensions. Many of us have seen first hand the financial impact on projects not managed correctly or having an inexperienced staff required to aggregate all the services needed.

Expedited work or pushing old WAN circuit costs to month-to-month contracts both add cost. But, the most common financial exposures come from tearing out and replacing installed components that should have been specified and installed right the first time.

Surprise costs associated with media converters, dedicated electrical power, and new conduits, often can add $5,000-$20,000 to the installation expenses. Local expedite fees or rush-charges of $5,000 to avoid missing deadlines are not uncommon. For an installation budgeted to cost less than $10,000, the added cost is a hard reality to face and explain. Multiply those number times the number of locations and inevitably the enterprise’s credibility is damaged. Such financial risk is unacceptable, but easily avoidable.

#1 Expedite fees

#2 Additional Insurance Requirements

#3 Utility and Permitting

#4 Violating terms of tenancy or encroaching on the rights of neighbor

#5 Non-compliance with municipal and landlord stipulations.

As you can see, there are many financial risks in WAN Ethernet installations.  Nationwide SCS has installed hundreds of WAN projects and we have a systamtic approach for success..

Removing risk begins with removing assumptions

Communication, Documentation and Seeing Around Corners are the big three roles for risk mitigation.

Communication

Early, Frequent and granular communication streamlines any project, but especially WAN Ethernet installations with construction requirements.

Documentation

Documentation is critical.  Email communications, project agreements, field notes and project conversations should all be recorded and appropriatly dispersed immediatly.

Seeing Around Corners

It is all about expierence.  Knowing what questions to ask, what tasks to prioritize and which stakeholders to approach (and in which order) is paramount to project success.

Learning through experience

We are continously learning and adjusting to make our process better.  We install hundreds of projects each quarter for our customers…and we use that expierence to make future customer expierences better.

Sometimes you should take the road more traveled.
